The beautiful handkerchief was made by Samuel Lamont here in Ireland. I was delighted to see old handkerchiefs reside in a beautiful case at Cobh Heritage Museum. Embroidery, and indeed crochet, are an old Irish skill, and it was a meant-to-be treasure for members within the May MyIrelandBox. Samuel Lamont & Sons Ltd is a family business which has been manufacturing and supplying Irish homewares for almost two hundred years!
Perhaps then, a Samuel Lamont embroidered handkerchief left Ireland with a passenger many year ago when many left Ireland to emigrate!
Founded in 1830 by the man whose name it bears, Samuel Lamont & Sons Ltd. became one of Northern Ireland’s foremost linen weavers. Diversifying during the 1950’s into textile printing and terry towel manufacturing Samuel Lamont soon had an enviable range of top-quality household textile items. It gained the Royal Warrant both for retailing and for the supply of bed linen. This company was a founding member of the Irish Linen Guild and it is still a member today.
Thank you to Joe Lamont and team for making this lovely piece for us!
