Ann’s Delectable Blackberry Jam
I thought that you would love this recipe as I know many of you enjoy the jams that I
usually send to you. So let’s all make our own I say!
The Irish, especially those of us who live in the countryside, are now in the midst of
blackberry picking, an old Irish family tradition. Blackberry jam making is in full swing.
Just this morning, I had a lovely conversation with a family friend, Ann, about this cherished activity. She was reminded of her youth when her mother would choose a day for the family to go blackberry picking. Ann, her mother, and her siblings would
take to the country roads and fields here on the Dingle Peninsula to pick buckets of these little gifts from nature. They would bring them home and help their mother make the jam that would be enjoyed on fresh Irish brown bread with butter for the
foreseeable future. They would also mash some of the blackberries, add some sugar and a tiny bit of milk, and have it on buttered bread—a nostalgic treat that made Ann yearn for some as she spoke.
